Netherlands suspends financial aid to Rwanda

This is serious, responsible foreign policy. The Dutch government can take this measure because Dutch economic interests in the region are small, in comparison to its neighbours. It is the right decision, but it is also true that rising the flag of human rights is easier for them.

However, for Angela Merkel, in spite of the examples of brave foreign policy she has shown in cases such as Tibet, this is a completely different situation. I would like to think that she is brave enough to follow Dutch steps and change German foreign policy in the region. But there are too many interests, and too much pressure.

In foreign policy, these are the situations when great leaders show what they are made of.
